I am surprised there have been no reviews yet of this book, and though I have never written a review of anything before, I had to remedy that after reading this story. We read aloud every night as a family, and had read over a dozen of Henty's books already. This one did not appeal to me in the beginning in either title or the picture on the cover, but my husband picked it.It turns out we all loved it and have not enjoyed an adventure story of any type as much as this in a long time! Henty has some stories that deal mostly with war and troop movements, and they can be a bit dry. In this one there is no war going on, but the main character escapes from a Siberian prison and spends most of the book surviving in the wild with a companion.
There are detailed descriptions of several native peoples and their customs in varying parts of Siberia, ranging from near the border of China to the northern banks of the Yenesei and west to Norway. Henty tells of preserving food for the long arctic winter, of details of dress and shelter, of bear and wolf attacks, ermine and sable hunting for the furs.
I highly recommend this book, and my husband and two teenage sons agree.
