I’ve read at least 12 books on the A.T. and “A sign of Madness” is in my top 3. Like another review said; he doesn’t ramble, trying to name as many thru-hikers with trail names.I am a few years older than Mark, but can relate to his need for company while balancing solitude.
He effortlessly conveys what it is REALLY like to hike the trail. It is very difficult. I know, because I was on it this year, and during a rainstorm and the rocks of good old Rocksylvania, fell and sustained a moderate concussion.
He has a sharp wit; very intelligent, thought out humor just touching on sarcasm. He makes his story 3 dimensional. I felt like I was walking right behind him. He did this ‘walk’ 30 or so years earlier, and decided in his 50’s if he could still do it again. He realizes he is not the same young man back then, and accepts his aging. I liked that.
Like a friend told me the other day; “This getting old business, couldn’t come at a worse time!”
I enjoyed his insights as to why people hike the trail, why some (younger) hikers ZOOM thru the trail, not noticing the beauty around them.
I encountered many of these young bucks, who thought only in miles not memories. “Mile Eaters'
If you want a very good overview of what to expect on the trail, I would highly recommend this book!! David M

A Sign Of Madness ReHiking the 2185 Mile Appalachian Trail eBook Mark Heying Reviews
Easy enjoyable read at just the right pace and amount of journal day's. Loved the context of it being a second thru hike compared to a much younger original thru hike. Worth reading after the major thru hike books have been read.
The story of a guy doing his his second through hike.
Most of the details consist of his mental thoughts that consist of the "get off my lawn" sorts of thoughts.
I have read a lot of AT books. This one is certainly near the top. It was an easy and relaxed read, I enjoyed the journey!
Was a decent read but I didn't always care for the attitude of this author.
I really "appreciated" this book. Over the years I've read a good many AT narratives. This book, not overly long, set a nice pace early on and kept it throughout. It was generous with bits of advice if you wanted to learn things about hiking the AT, but not so much detail as to wear you out. The book was well written and edited. I'm happy to add it to my collection. Thanks Mark for a job well done and a thru hike well executed.
What a 👍great trail 👣book! Enjoyed it from start to finish! Told with honesty, sincerity, and made me wish I had done a thru hike instead of so much section hiking! Oh well, it is all good! Love the beautiful pictures...what a treat! They add so much! Thanks Mark!
A very, very good book about the AT tru-hiking. The author is smart, funny (but doesn't try too much, like many memoirists do), and the book is well balanced and very well written. Some people say Mark Heying complains too much, but they probably didn't read Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods. That was complaining ad nauseam! I've read tens of book about AT, and this is really one of the best IMHO. It was a pleasure (and an informative one) to read it.
