First of all, let me just say I wish I would've read this book BEFORE reading AGAINST THE TIDE... it gives so much more depth to Bane in the next book (I'll write a review for the other book as well with more info on that topic).

As far as this book goes, it was a captivating read that I didn't want to put down! The characters are beautifully flawed which is a nice break from historical romance novels where either the hero or heroine is ridiculously perfect and the other has to play catch up. I think that's probably what I like most about Elizabeth Camden's books (which I've now read all of them!); her characters have big, unique issues that are insurmountable without God's intervention. It makes them more realistic and (gasp!) there's always a moment in each book where you just really don't like one of the main characters but you find yourself rooting for them anyway, and this book was no exception.

There are two reasons I give this four stars instead of five: one is because of the Professor, who I found so disturbing I had to skim-read when he came in to play. I just can't stomach what he does (and has done) to people, whatever their age. I know he's creepy for a reason, but as Bane said "I've met the devil himself," and I couldn't agree more. Secondly, it got quite preachy towards the end. I am a Christian and I enjoy reading conversion/redemption stories, but Clara was almost too much. MILD SPOILER ALERT: If I were Bane and in his shoes, I think I'd be more annoyed at Clara than anything, but then again Bane went his whole life without someone really caring, so maybe it didn't turn him off as much as it did me as the reader- if that makes any sense. Other than those two things, the book was excellent and I'd gladly read it again!

Over all, it was an excellent read but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you read this FIRST before reading Against the Tide!

I'll be honest, I downloaded this book because of the lush, beautiful cover. I knew it was a Christian romance, but some of them are really good, so I wasn't worried about that. However, this book suffered from the bizarre combination of a played-out plot (young rich girl falls for a poor boy with a chip on his shoulder, her family keeps them apart, boy grows up to become rich and they meet again) with a blatantly unbelievable subplot (evil super-bad "Professor" and his teenage genius henchman threaten hero and heroine).

The book begins with the introduction of Daniel and Clara. Daniel's father has just died in a boiler incident and Daniel, his family already struggling, is forced to confront how he is going to care for his mother and sisters. The only bright spot in his life is his friendship with affluent Clara, the daughter of a preacher. She is shipped off to England and they fall out of touch. Fast-forward to their adulthood and Clara is just being released from a London jail for charges related to her muck-raking journalism. Clara is a real prissy-pants. Her cellmates are desperately poor and Clara is benevolent enough to forgive them for what they were forced to do to survive, thinking of them as "otherwise decent." Since she's never HAD to work a day in her life, I suppose that is very generous of her. Her career in shambles, she is shipped back to Baltimore, where she and Daniel reconnect.

Up until this point, it's a pretty standard story. Clara and Daniel realize that they have strong feelings for each other, blah blah blah. Then, in the fifth chapter, the story takes a sudden, wacky detour as the character of Bane is introducted. A teenage criminal supergenius who lives in an opium-ridden gothic castle, Bane works for a super-villain known as the "Professor." They are dedicated to evil and, for reasons that are never fully explained, destroying Daniel and his business. Unfortunately for evil, I'll just say that no baddie can be left unchaperoned in Clara's shining grace without being converted. Bane's plot -- and his five-minute conversion -- simply defy even the most generous suspension of disbelief.

The romantic plot is so unimaginative, the danger subplot is so wacky, and Clara's conversionary superpowers are so ridiculous, I recommend skipping this. Take a good look at the cover and move on -- you'll have already experienced the best part of the book.
The best thing about Elizabeth Camden’s appealing first novel, The Lady of Bolton Hill, is Clara Endicott, the strong yet tender-hearted heroine determined to right the wrongs in the world in whatever way she can, while secretly yearning for the love of her childhood sweetheart, Daniel Tremain. But Daniel, despite his love for Clara is battling his own demons. The primary one being an insatiable desire to avenge the wrongs done to his family. Daniel’s anger so consumes him that he is in serious danger of losing the only woman he has ever loved because of his unwillingness to forgive. Camden has created in Daniel a bombastic hero whose candor and passion makes him a fitting match for her selfless, gracious heroine. I really enjoyed watching the two overcome their personal struggles and finding their way to each other!
