This truly has to be one of the best historical romance series ever. McCarty starts the story off with excitement and doesn't let up the entire book. The one is just as great as the first two. This could be read as a stand alone, but I wouldn't recommend it. We were introduced to Arthur in the first book, and I couldn't wait to get to his story; he just fascinated me. You'd miss a lot of the Guard's history if you skip any of the books. Arthur and Anna are just wonderful together, and I was on pins and needles about Anna finding out about Arthur's background. The romance was wonderfully hot. Just beware of the rats - mwaaaahahahahaha.Tags : The Ranger: A Highland Guard Novel [Monica McCarty] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <b>Chosen to help Robert the Bruce in his quest to free Scotland from English rule and claim his crown,Monica McCarty,The Ranger: A Highland Guard Novel,Ballantine Books,0345518268,Romance - Historical - General,Historical fiction.,Love stories.,FICTION Historical General,FICTION Romance General,FICTION Romance Historical General,Fiction,Fiction - Romance,Fiction-Romance,FictionHistorical - General,FictionLiterary,General Adult,Historical - General,Historical fiction,Literary,Love stories,MASS MARKET,Romance,RomanceHistorical,Romance: Historical, best sellers list new york times;new york times best sellers;action and adventure;Highland Guard;warrior;passionate romance;passionate;adventure romance;love story;love;historical women's fiction;women's fiction;highlanders;historical adventure;adventure;Scottish historical romance;Scottish romance;Scottish;historical fiction novels;historical fiction;historical romance series;romance series;romance book;romance books;romance novel;romance novels;highlander romance;historical romance;romance, romance; historical romance; action and adventure; Highland Guard; warrior; passionate romance; passionate; adventure romance; love story; love; historical women's fiction; women's fiction; highlanders; historical adventure; adventure; Scottish historical romance; Scottish romance; Scottish; historical fiction novels; historical fiction; historical romance series; romance series; romance book; romance books; romance novel; romance novels; highlander romance; best sellers list new york times; new york times best sellers
The Ranger A Highland Guard Novel Monica McCarty 9780345518262 Books Reviews
The character back story was the best, but I found it had a little too much angst. Anna had some guts, but she struck me as a little too clingy sometimes emotionally. Turned the story cringey sometimes.
The reason for the rating and what I liked about this book is the suspense of what was going to happen next. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in honor and love.
This is one of my favorite Highlander series I have read. The research and historical accuracy that McCarty works into the narrative is impressive and engaging. The characters are compelling and I love how with such a large group of characters, not one of them is the same nor are they "cookie-cutter" in character. The series is a must read!
This was an enjoyable read, with plenty of action. The characters of the H and h were reasonably well developed, both having their flaws and strong points. Neither seemed terribly lacking. There is enough historical truth behind the books that I can believe much of the action and I really appreciate that Ms. McCarty finishes out her books with the actual history behind her stories.
Arthur has been sent by Robert the Bruce to spy on a key enemy chieftain, thinking it only too convenient that this chieftain is the very same one that he wants vengeance against for the death of his father, but upon arriving he finds his attraction to the chieftain's daughter, Anna, interfering with his ability to attend to his mission. This is definitely my favorite of the series thus far! More than the others I felt there was legitimate reason for Arthur to hold out as long as he did, struggling with commitment under the circumstances, not just delaying for the sake of being difficult. Anna was great! A bit naive, but strong and bold, never afraid to say what she means, preferring to get everything out in the open so everyone knows where they stand, which is why Arthur with his necessary secrets confounded her so much. The exploration of the question of loyalties, both Arthur's and Anna's, as well as the one-sided view we can sometimes have of some people, especially those close to us, was great! The next book in this series is The Viper.
The Ranger is Arthur Campbell's story. The last we had heard of Arthur; he had been dismissed from the Highland Guard the first year of his training because it appeared he couldn't pass the rigorous training exercises given by The Chief of the Highland Guard. Arthur has been sent to spy on the MacDougalls by Robert The Bruce. John MacDougall murdered Arthurs father and now he wants revenge. But Arthur falls in love with Anna MacDougalls John MacDougalls daughter who is being used as a secret messenger by her father to help King Edward and the English to stop the Scottish Rebellion.
I have become enthrall with Monica McCarty and her Highland Guard series. Arthur and Anna made a wonderful couple. The story is adventurous, exciting very sensuous and romantic. I am off to read The Viper next. .
This is the third volume of the Highland Guard series and it is filled with action, suspense and romance from the first page until the last. The Highland Guard would be the Scottish equivalent to our modern day Seals and this group has bonded and is so talented in warfare that you wonder if they even have time for love. Of course, they do.
Ranger's particular role in the Guard is that of Spy for King Robert Bruce which requires him to become a member of the opposing side. His assignment, this time is to become a member of John of Lorn's team as Lorn is one of the final clan's standing in the way of Robert Bruce becoming the King of Scotland, Arthur Campbell, the Ranger, accepts this assignment with glee as he has waited 14 years to get justice for his father whom John of Lorn killed dishonorably. What he did not anticipate was that he would be attracted to the daughter of his arch enemy. Thus the tale begins and in a carefully crafted manner, the reader experiences the growth of love and the tensions which result from trying to complete an important task important to the war and loyalty to family.
The novel is not only well written but the reader is engaged because you are constantly switched from Anna's voice describing
her feelings about a certain event to Arthur's voice describing the same experience. You are, thus, pulled in two directions by the loyalties of each as well as their attraction. This is a spellbinding novel which has the reader constantly wondering - What choice will he or she make?
Historical romances are a favorite genre and Monica McCarty’s are especially well researched. Her characters are well developed, with personalities as much a mixed bag as yours and mine. The story is told from a dual POV, that of Arthur and Anna, who seem to bring out the best in each other. An this is despite Arthur’s reluctance to develop a close relationship with anyone, having long since convinced himself it was better that way. “The Ranger” is intricately plotted and should have moved along nicely but the dialogue and interaction between the characters is often buried beneath pages and pages of inner musings. I found myself having to swipe back several pages to find the question that was just then being answered. However, once the action got started, the pacing picked up and I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next.
