After reading ON A HIGHLAND SHORE and its sequel RIVALS FOR THE CROWN, I became a devoted fan of Givens and her amazing talent for weaving a story from history that sweeps you away.

KILGANNON is a story of the same Highlander family in ON A HIGHLAND SHORE, but ten generations later--in 1712. Set in Scotland and England, it tells the story of Mary Lowell, a pampered debutante, swept up in London's society of parties and entertainment. Mary saw no suitors that appealed to her but then it was expected she'd marry the Campbell. Then Alex MacGannon, the Earl of Kilgannon, shows up at a soiree in London one evening wearing a kilt and Mary is intrigued, captivated.

They called Lord Kilgannon a barbarian, a Scottish chief of clan MacGannon who sailed the seas in his ships. But Mary finds the Scottish lord polished and with a wonderful sense of humor. Alex knows what he wants and he wants Mary Lowell for his wife, to live with him and his two young sons in castle Kilgannon. The Highlands are torn by rebellion, and Mary is drawn into the conflict as another man competes for her love.

Alex is every bit the man his ancestor, Gannon, was and I could not help falling in love with him as he pursued the English heroine, a strong woman of character who would leave her own land for his. Givens' writing is wonderfully descriptive and the feelings between the two characters develop subtly and believably. You are drawn into their world without realizing it.

The sequel, THE WILD ROSE OF KILGANNON, continues story of Alex and Mary as they face England's wrath together. When you can't stop reading, you know you've found a keeper. The two books comprise a rich tale of the 18th century you will want to re-read! Givens is a superb storyteller.

After reading the high praise for this book I was disappointed. The writing is fair and while the story line works for the first part of the book one soon realizes that many plot points are really for an upcoming book. As this was a first novel by this author I thought that it would stand on it's own but ***SPOILER*** when I got to the end I was right in my suspicion that this was all set up for a second book. I love series and don't have a problem with plot points scattered as seeds for upcoming works but usually those books stand on their own and have a conclusion on their own. After the first part (noted as such), it's all set up for the sequel. When I don't race to finish a book but feel that "I might as well since I'm half way through" it's not a good sign.
I read the kindle version. ridiculous amount of typos/editing errors. WOW. Even on the blurb @end where the title of next volume is misspelled. So, the book. Reads like someone who read outlander series when they were in high school, and now that they are in college, have been given assignment to write their own historical romance. Sure, she mentions the attraction between the main characters, but this woman is so shallow, it's hard to see how they fell in love. It seems like it's a paint by numbers version of outlander series to me. She endures three miscarriages, yet spends little time thinking about it. When Alex commits to join the uprising, we read her pleadings for him to stay for page after page. Not all that likeable, IMO. Her motivations are not explored, all Alex gets to say is "I love you, lass", sorry, won't be reading the next volume....
This is definitely worth reading. I was, as many of Givens other followers, searching for a compelling novel to read while waiting for another installment by Diana Gabaldon. I found this book entertaining. Givens did a good job developing the characters and their struggles. I would have liked getting into their heads a little more. The conflict with Malcolm was a great addition but there again, perhaps a bit more. No need for a lot more just a little more foreshadowing, a little more struggle to justify her hatred. At times you almost lose her compelling justification of her feelings toward Malcolm. I loved and sympathized with Alex and his struggle to protect his clan and love his family. I would definitely recommend the book. One last thing, I read this book on kindle and noticed an awful amount of type O' s .
I have always said if a book makes me cry then it's a good book. Well Kilgannon made me sob. The last chapter the tears started flowing and the nose started running. The problem with all of this was it was happening at 2am and my husband was sound asleep so I was trying to be quite. Then when the nose stopped running then it plugged up and I couldn't breath. It was at least an hour before I could breath and go to sleep. This book was written well and it hooked me. I love Scottish history and this had factual details. My only complaint would be the editing sucked in the e-book. It was really bad in some places but I still would recommend this book to friends.
I have come to expect a fair amount of typos in free books. Sad but true, it is often the case. However, this is the first book I have paid more then a couple bucks for that had so many typos. It is not just a few, but rather, it is significant. Some are minor enough to barely notice. Others are major, such as the first word of a new paragraph just missing, or what should read as "Alex" being typed as NlXT. There were a few that were messed up enough that I was unable to even determine what the word was suppose to be. There were words missing, extra words and two words joined together rpeatedly. The sad thing is that it is a good read and an entertaining story. But I am very dissapointed to pay $8 for a book that cleary has not been edited at all. I would have purchased more of this author based on the story itself, but due to all the typos and mistakes, I most likely will not.
