Min Monster Mrs Lila Pinord Books
Tomanous - The Quinnu term for a guardian used only for good - the white men call them 'guardian angels' but they are so much more - as described in Lila L. Pinord's taut Min's Monster - indeed, the beginning pages are so full of beauty describing a sighting of a young man's Tomanous, you wonder how does this fit in with a frightening book...but oh, it does....
Set in the 1950's, on a Quinnu Reservation, a prisoner escapes - not your run of the mill bad guy - this guy cut his own mother's tongue out to keep her from ratting on him - escapes and finds refuge in what he thinks is an empty cabin - But it's not -
The cabin's owners are going into the city for a pre-Thanksgiving run - but their young daughter, Min, decides to stay back -
In the meantime - a riproaring snowstorm starts and makes all traffic come to a standstill -
Min must keep herself hidden from this man who has taken over the cabin - and when she is found out - begins a terrifying cat and mouse chase with high stakes - Bruno - the escapee is becoming a monster - his Tomanous? - and he/it wants to kill Min -
In the meantime, Min's parents, the sheriff, and others are trying to get to the cabin -
This is a time without cellphones, computers, and modern conveniences - so Min cannot warn or be warned - or told help is on the way -
But - here is another Tomanous - Min's animal spirit is a Crow - and it overlooks and guides the people to Min -
This is not a story for the faint of heart - The ending is a hold your breath I can't believe this is happening ending -
A sweet looking lady like Mrs. Pinord doesn't look like she can write something as scary as this - but, come to think of it, probably Mary Shelley didn't look like someone who could write Frankenstein...
Min's Monster will make you check your locks and keep the lights on...
Excellent!

Min Monster Mrs Lila Pinord Books Reviews
Lila Pinord's "Min's Monster" was a fantastic read. The chapters are fairly quick, and I found myself "finding time" in my busy schedule to "read just one more..." Although the beginning was a bit slow to start for me - more so of my hectic schedule, rather than anything else - that did not last long at all...the author quickly reels you in and DOES NOT let go!
I loved the way the characters were brought together by fate, and more so, the way the author incorporates local legends into the storyline.
A very, very enjoyable read, and I'm looking forward to reading more of her books!

Ms. Pinord is an artful storyteller. Her very visual style transports the reader to places we'd love to go, yet hate to be trapped in. Her description of the village and surrounding landscape is so thorough that I feel like I've been there. We feel it's charm and share the Life of it's people. But then, just as skillfully, she takes us inside the mind of a serial killer...a 'monster' who lives to inflict pain and exact revenge on anyone he targets. The villagers are ill-prepared to deal with this evil deposited in their midst...or are they? Ms. Pinord takes each of us back to our childhood when our worst nightmare was being small and defenseless against some beastly intruder. This talented author gives us a superb backstory on our characters and even our 'monster'. She manages to evoke a modicum of sympathy for him although we know that difficult choices must be made.
Min's Monster takes place during and right after a terrific snowstorm in Washington State. Pinord lets us into the minds of a serial killer escaping from prison, a child (Min) hidden upstairs in the house in which he holes up, the child's parents, a sherrif's deputy struggling with a bittersweet homecoming, and the killer's mother, victim, and father of a victim.
As Pinord ratchets up the suspense and lets the blizzard howl, we learn more about the killer's serial past. Young readers beware Pinord gets a bit graphic describing his crimes.
Pinord has created a vivid, evil monster to hate. Min is easy to root for her "let me try" attitude makes her very sympathetic.
I liked how Pinord weaved in a few Native American trivia and legends - the "tomanous" concept was fascinating, and it provided a nice overall theme to the story. I look forward to reading Pinord's other books.
Min's Monster is at first blush a horror story about an escaped psychopath, but it is much more than that. The novel starts off by inviting the reader into the world of Native American myth, which will continue to be woven beautifully throughout the tale. Lila Pinord wrote Min's Monster in a setting that she is intimately familiar with - a remote fishing village in a time before computers and cell phones, and she deftly conveys the feel of life there in a myriad of rich details, the people, their habits and lifestyle, the places in and around the village, the people's connection to each other, their sense of community and history, as well as the land around them. The tale is shown through the eyes of the many people involved in the history of, or the pursuit of, or race from, an utterly deranged serial killer. Where Lila really succeeds is in her subtle, evocative storytelling. You feel what the characters feel, you feel the surroundings, their struggles, their regret, their loneliness and sorrow, their fear and desperation, the icy cold of a snowstorm that has gripped the players, and you are even brought into the mind of the malevolent "Mutilator", in ways that will make you most uneasy - there moments that are truly horrifying. Lila weaves her threads carefully and thoughtfully throughout the tapestry of her story, and delivers a satisfying read - one that I easily read straight through over the course of a couple of days. Lila is a talented author and I will certainly not hesitate to pick up her other books.
